Titus and the Local Church
Titus for Our Times: Living Christ in a Corrupt Culture – Setting Things Straight in paperback - April 12, 2025.
The world and cultures within are in constant change and declining in varying degrees of corruption. In stark contrast, life in Christ is counter-cultural in every
aspect, and the one correcting and preserving truth through devotion to "the God who cannot lie," brings true life in "this present corrupt generation." This is the grace of God in a fallen world, for the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age, as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ (Titus 2:11-13).
The Titus Template: The Epistle of Titus for Our Times – A Practical Biblical Commentary in paperback - September 23, 2024.
The New Testament Epistle of Paul to Titus is essential for the church today. This practical commentary is designed to be a biblical tool for church planters and cross-cultural missionary church planters. It seeks to present both the theological themes that filled the text of Paul to Titus, while also being a biblical manual for those seeking to establish churches on the foundational essentials of the local church, especially in the context of this present evil age.
A Biblical Journey of the Church Planting Missionary: Charting the Course According to the Book of Titus - Church Planting in Reverse in paperback - August 23, 2024
If the task of church planting could be characterized by anything, it could easily be similar to sailing a ship. It may start with smooth sailing, only to be confronted with unanticipated and unpredictable weather and storms. As a matter of fact, it was a storm that "led" the apostle Paul to the Island of Crete, whereupon, following his Roman confinement, he returned with a young protege named Titus, and launched a church planting ministry founded on biblical truth, and met every challenge of culture and a broken society to"set things straight" by the life transforming power of the gospel of grace in Christ Jesus. This biblical strategy for church planting cannot be improved upon. Set sail for a study in the Book of Titus.
The Journey of the Church Planting Missionary: Church Planting in Reverse - A charting course according to the book of Titus in paperback - August 17, 2024
What?! Another book on church planting!? I (Daniel Fredericks) feel the same way, quite frankly. But then again, why not? It seems everyone has something to say on the topic. I'd like to say something, too. So here it goes. Instead of the trendy methodologies of "church planting," think outside the box. This is a conversation starter to think inside the book . . . the New Testament book of Titus. It's quite the journey that led the apostle Paul and his protege Titus to plant churches on the island of Crete. Let's take a journey. Warning. It could get stormy!
Order in the Church: The Divine Pattern and Plan for the Local Church according to the book of Titus, in paperback - August 20, 2024
The church... each local church... is not a human institution. By divine design, it is the "mystery plan of God" at work by the eternal plan and purpose of the Trinity and declared by Christ as "My church." His, uniquely, not "ours". By God's purpose and design through Christ Jesus, as Lord of the church, He is about "setting straight" all aspects of mankind. He is Lord of the church and, as such, He declares, "Order in the Church." The Epistle of Paul of Titus shows us how, step-by-step.
Key Features of the Book of Titus Addressed by Daniel Paul Fredericks
Daniel Paul Fredericks has contributed valuable commentaries on the New Testament, specifically on the Epistle of Titus. His works are noted for their clarity, accessibility, and insightful theological reflections. Here are the key aspects highlighted in his commentaries.
1. Purpose and Context
Fredericks emphasizes the context of Paul's letter to Titus, highlighting its role in guiding the early church in Crete. He discusses how Titus was left on the island to establish and organize the church, addressing issues such as sound doctrine and community ethics.
2. Sound Doctrine
A significant focus of the commentary is on sound doctrine as a foundation for church life. Fredericks asserts that Paul urges Titus to teach what aligns with healthy doctrine (Titus 2:1). This involves a strong emphasis on the necessity of theological truth in countering false teachings prevalent among the Cretan believers.
3. Qualifications for Leaders
Fredericks details the qualifications for church leaders, outlining Paul's criteria for elders in Titus 1:5-9. He explains that leadership should be characterized by integrity, sound faith, and moral conduct, which establishes a model for Christian living.
4. Ethical Living
Fredericks underscores the importance of ethical behavior in the Christian community. He notes how Paul instructs various groups within the church - older men, older women, younger men, and slaves to live in ways that reflect their faith (Titus 2:2-10). This instruction ties back to the overarching theme of good works that glorify God.
5. Good Works and Witness
The commentary highlights the theme of good works as an essential aspect of faith. Fredericks points out that Paul encourages believers to engage in good deeds as a testament to their faith, benefiting both the community and enhancing the church's witness to outsiders (Titus 3:1).
6. God's Grace and Salvation
Fredericks brings attention to the theological dimensions of grace and salvation presented in Titus, particularly in Titus 2:11-14. He explores how God's grace teaches believers to renounce ungodliness and live righteously, linking doctrine to the transformative power of the Gospel.
7. Authority and Community Structure
The significance of authority in church governance is another vital topic. Fredericks asserts that Paul's instructions to Titus aim to establish a healthy church structure that promotes spiritual growth and accountability among its members.
8. Conclusion and Encouragement
Fredericks concludes with an emphasis on the letter's aim to encourage unity and sound practices within the church. By maintaining a focus on Christ and the doctrines of faith, Fredericks argues that the church can thrive even amid challenges and temptations.
Through these key features, Daniel Paul Fredericks' commentaries provide a framework for understanding how the book of Titus addresses vital aspects of church leadership, ethical living, and the centrality of the Gospel in believers' lives.
